C’est aussi une passion nationale qui renaît, transformant champs et parcs en temples éphémères de la musique : c’est la saison des festivals ! Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, Reading and Leeds, Parklife… ces événements ne sont pas qu’un passe-temps de l’été, mais le reflet des transformations sociales et culturelles du pays. Glastonbury, créé en 1970, incarne l’apogée de cette tradition. Chaque année, plus de 200 000 festivaliers bravent la boue et les prix des billets pour assister à des performances mémorables (David Bowie, The Cure, Dolly Parton, Beyoncé…). Cependant, le festival, considéré comme l’un des plus célèbres au monde, fait face à des défis, entre critiques sur le manque de diversité, difficultés à attirer une nouvelle génération et raréfaction des célébrités capables de rassembler. Autre événement emblématique, le Festival de l’île de Wight a marqué l’histoire des festivals à la fin des années 60, devenant le théâtre d’un affrontement entre la génération de la contre-culture et l’establishment rural. Des légendes comme Jimi Hendrix et Bob Dylan y ont offert des performances mémorables devant des centaines de milliers de jeunes. Bien qu’accusé de chaos, il fut perçu par beaucoup comme le « Woodstock britannique ». En 2025, le paysage des festivals du pays est plus diversifié que jamais. Isle of Wight 1970 became the British festival that we associate with disaster. The myth goes that a group of young men, out to make a few quid from youthful music fans, put on the largest-ever pop festival in Britain at the time. To protect their investment and rake in gatereceipts,theyerectedfencingaroundthe site to contain the crowd of 600,000 and exclude troublemakers. Building on a few references in the press, the popular image is of radicalsandFrenchanarchistsfloodingdown from Desolation Hill, which overlooked the festival site, and ripping down the fencing. 3. But it is easy to get the wrong impression about the 1970 festival. It has been mythologised and attacked for personal and political reasons, but against most criteria other than finances (a £40,000-£60,000 loss), the evidencerevealsabeguilingandmisunderstood story. It suggests the festival was not as bad as it seems – in fact, at the time some saw it as the British Woodstock. 4. The East Afton site was only agreed in early August, weeks before the festival opened at the start of the bank holiday. The valley would soon host a stage, 20 turnstiles, 66 food and drink stalls, 500 toilets and 600 feet of urinals. 8. Reports from the time, and footage, suggestthatthecrowdwitnessedsomestunning performances. Douglas Osmond, the chief constable of Hampshire police, dressed up like a hippy and went incognito on Desolation Hill for a day. He claimed to see less violence than at a typical football match and concluded that “people become unduly anxious about these gatherings”. Media coverage didn't help 10. Everynationalnewspaperreportedonthe festival, with some of them, glad for news in August, printing extensive coverage. These generally positive reports were punctuated by scurrilous stories about sex and drugs, outraged locals and photographs of nude (mostly female) bodies. It is interesting, then, that a view of the festival as a disaster has come to dominate. Organisers blame the late documentary film-maker Murray Lerner. The film exaggerates the intensity, significance and extent of either disturbance. 11.
