The Swann Awards held in Paris on 21 September proved that elegance is not dead, and what's more, the interest shown in it by the younger generation, with over three million reposts on social networks, shows that it has a bright future ahead of it. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the professionals who put their trust in us and attended this first edition, some of whom travelled a long way to be there, the influencers and all the anonymous fans who relayed and supported it on their accounts. Everyone, in their own way, is part of this crusade we've been waging for the past twenty years, which makes dissidents of us all, as sociologist Mathieu Bock-Côté analysed in a recent interview. A view summed up brilliantly by some of our guests: Sonya Nicholson, who talks of "bringing people together to celebrate the cause of elegance in a world that desperately needs more beauty"; Farid Boumayla, who explains that "for one evening, the Swann Awards suspended time" and "celebrated a value that has been neglected for too long: elegance"; and our excellent colleague Parisian Gentleman, who talks of an "International of Elegance". Montherlant spoke of the greatness of demiurges "tearing themselves apart to offer (their) fruits, because that is their function”. Dissenters perhaps, but resigned to remaining so, certainly not! Ouf ! Les Prix Swann qui se sont déroulés à Paris le 21 septembre dernier l’ont démontré : l’élégance n’est pas morte, et mieux : l’intérêt que les jeunes générations lui ont démontré à travers plus de trois millions de reposts sur les réseaux sociaux, révèle qu’elle a de beaux jours devant elle. Je tenais à remercier ici les professionnels qui nous ont fait confiance et ont assisté à cette première édition, certains venus de très loin pour cela, les influenceurs et tous les amateurs anonymes qui l’ont relayée et soutenue sur leurs comptes. Chacun à sa manière participe à cette croisade qui est la nôtre depuis vingt ans et qui fait de chacun de nous des dissidents, ainsi que l’analysait le sociologue Mathieu Bock-Côté dans une interview qu’il nous a récemment accordée. Une opinion que certains de nos invités ont résumé brillamment : ainsi Sonya Nicholson, qui parle de « rassembler les gens afin de célébrer la cause de l’élégance dans un monde qui a désespérément besoin de plus de beauté », Farid Boumayla, qui explique que « pendant une soirée, les Swann Awards ont suspendu le temps » et « célébré une valeur délaissée depuis trop longtemps : l’élégance » ou notre excellent confrère Parisian Gentleman qui parle d’une Internationale de l’élégance. Montherlant parlait de la grandeur des démiurges « se déchirant pour offrir (leurs) fruits, car telle est leur fonction ». Dissidents peut-être, mais résignés à le demeurer certainement pas ! Sauvons l'élégance Yves Denis - ydenis@dandy-mag.com Saving elegance The meticulous craftmanship of Breguet’s Répétitions Minutes series introduced by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1783, truly epitomises its qualification as a grande complication, which for passionate horologists makes it a most fascinating creation. Whilst the iconic tourbillon appeals to aesthetics and is endowed with its own unique mechanism, the beauty of the minute repeater lies in the complex relationship between its refined engineering technique and acoustics. The detail-oriented craft consists in the perfect harmonic and melodic tuning of the watch’s exceptional gong spring – a unique piece, which sets itself from its competitors. On this exceptional date, as the watch’s perfectly timed hammer strikes the minute repeater’s balance spring thus creating a watch enthusiast’s favourite symphony, we are reminded of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s ingenuity. In 18-carat rose gold with ‘grand feu’ enamel dial, 42mm diameter, 40-hour power reserve, 264.000 euros. Parmi les grandes complications horlogères, la répétition minute a toujours fait partie des plus fascinantes pour les connaisseurs. Beaucoup moins spectaculaire que le tourbillon, elle n’en nécessite pas moins des compétences qui dépassent largement la sphère habituelle de l’art horloger, puisque outre l’expertise d’un horloger spécialisé en complications, elle réclame également celle d’un acousticien employé à rechercher le son parfait qui devra, une fois l’assemblage du mouvement réalisé, accorder le timbre en termes harmonique puis mélodique. Un travail d’orfèvre pour régler le mécanisme de sonnerie composé de marteaux frappant sur un ressort timbre, imaginé et mis au point par Abraham-Louis Breguet en 1783. Différence notable avec les garde-temps modernes : le maître horloger n’utilisait pas alors un ressort timbre comme aujourd’hui mais un timbre cloche. Avec la Classique 7637, Breguet célèbre cette complication vieille cette année de 250 ans. En or rose 18 carats, diamètre 42 mm, cadran émail grand feu, réserve de marche 40 heures, 264.700 euros. Carefully crafted by the co-CEO (a watch and diving enthusiast), the cutting-edge invention would later be worn by divers in Louis Malle’s Palme d’Or documentary “the SilentWorld” – a film highlighting luxuriant marine biodiversity. Today, as two iconic Swatch Group brands unite (owners of Breguet, Glassütte, Jaquet, Droz, Longines…), the “Fifty Fathoms” is rebirthed thanks to Blancpain and Swatch’s partnership, thus giving birth to the “Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms”. Marc A. Hayek (CEO of the Swatch Group) openly expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration and praised Swatch as a brand that sustained Swiss horology. The Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms was imagined with the idea of honouring our five oceans and is available in five models: the Arctic Ocean (beige and orange hues), Pacific (yellow and black), Atlantic (navy blue and denim blue), Indian Ocean (green and black) and Antarctic (white and grey). Blancpain and Swatch’s latest mechanical innovation is one third bioceramic and two third recycled biomaterials sourced from ricin oil with a unique bracelet with finely interwoven recycled fish nets and is further endowed with a 90-hour power reserve. The Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms is available at an equally attractive 390 euros, thus increasing accessibility to acquiring Blancpain’s (revisited) iconic watches. Powered by its original manual 490 calibre, the latest Alpiner is subject to limited availability with only 28 models available – as was the case with its centuryold ancestor. The Alpiner Heritage Carrée Automatic 140 years, is newly equipped with a sapphire case back thus exposing its intricate automatism as well as an anti-reflective sapphire crystal protecting its classic sector dial minute track (and Arab numerals) reminiscent of the 1930s. Alpina’s modern re-creation also benefits from a larger yet compact dial of 39 x 32.5 x 9mm and is further equipped with an automatic AL-530 modern calibre and a 38-hour power reserve. Embellished with a refined ostrich bracelet, Alpina offers both a black dial with beige hands, as well as a silver dial with black hands and is set 1,450 euros. The Alpiner Heritage is an ideal investment for the elegant youth as it blends both classism and modernism, and ultimately presents itself as a great introduction to many other classics such as the Tank and the Reverso watches. Dans la foulée de ces collectors, la maison a décidé d’en assurer la continuité avec un modèle doté de l’un de ses mouvements contemporains, proposé en boîtier acier afin de le rendre accessible au plus grand nombre. C’est chose faite avec cette Alpiner Heritage Carrée Automatic 140 Years, qui reprend à son compte la boîte rectangulaire minimaliste et la minuterie sector dial typique des années 30 (une sensation renforcée par l’utilisation de chiffres arabes d’époque) du modèle originel, et l’équipe d’un mouvement automatique calibre AL-530 moderne. Légèrement agrandi, le boîtier reste compact, élégant et mixte avec 39 x 32,5 x 9 mm, et est aujourd’hui doté d’un verre saphir anti-reflets et d’un fond saphir révélant le mouvement. La réserve de marche de ce dernier est de 38 heures. Le modèle est proposé avec cadran noir (et aiguilles beiges) ou argenté (aiguilles noires) sur bracelet autruche. Vendue 1450 euros, l’Alpiner Heritage constitue un excellent access prime time pour les jeunes élégants et tous ceux qui en viendront un jour à la Tank ou la Reverso.
