Originally, they made them as promises to the gods. Article by Talitha Linehan adaptation of the Israeli series of the same name, ‘Euphoria’ debuted in 2019 and stars Zendaya as a drug-addicted teenager. For her role, Zendaya won not one but two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. That’s an incredible accomplishment at such a young age. Early life Zendaya, 28, was born in Oakland, California, to Claire Stoermer, who has German and Scottish ancestry, and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, who is African American with Nigerian ancestry. The name Zendaya comes from the Shona name Tendai, which means ‘to give thanks’. Shona is a Bantu language of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, Africa. Her parents were both teachers, and her mother was also a stage manager. So, as a child, Zendaya was often at the California Shakespeare Theater, where her mother worked. This experience of the stage inspired in Zendaya an interest in being an actor, and she later studied acting and played in local theatrical productions. On television At the age of 14, Zendaya got her first big role, in a comedy TV show on the Disney Channel entitled ‘Shake It Up’, which is about two friends who want to become professional dancers. Then, from 2015 to 2018, she starred in another comedy show on the Disney Channel, titled ‘K.C. Undercover’, as a girl who discovers that her parents are spies. However, it was her role in the HBO teen drama series ‘Euphoria’ that got her the most attention. An © Fred Duval/Shutterstock Zendaya, 2017 Clearly, Zendaya was born to be a star. Originally from California, she began her career as a model and dancer, before transitioning into acting in popular films and TV shows. She is best known for her roles in the Spider-Man films and for the TV show ‘Euphoria’, for which she became the youngest person ever to win the Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, at the age of 24. Undercover’, Zendaya got her first role in a Hollywood film. She played a trapeze artist in the 2017 musical biopic The Greatest Showman, which starred Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Michelle Williams and was an enormous success. That same year, she starred in the first of three Spider-Man films as Spider-Man’s love interest, Michelle ‘M.J.’ Jones. She played the same role in the three films: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Each of the films was a success, and Zendaya and her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland are now a couple. Zendaya has also been in the romantic drama films Malcolm & Marie (2021) and Challengers (2024), and the science-fiction films Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). As well as winning two Primetime Emmy Awards, she has also won a Golden Globe Award, and in 2022, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In music Incredibly, Zendaya is also a talented singer. In 2011, she released the songs ‘Swag It Out’ and ‘Watch Me’. A year later, she signed with Hollywood Records, and a year after that, she released her first studio album, titled Zendaya. The album’s first single, ‘Replay’, entered the top 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Then, in 2017, Zendaya collaborated with her costar from The Greatest Showman, Zac Efron, on the song ‘Rewrite’ from the film’s soundtrack. It entered the top 20 of several music charts and received multi-platinum sales certifications around the world. And she released a shoe collection, called Daya, in 2015, and a clothing line, Daya by Zendaya, in 2016. These turtles were found lethargic and would not survive due to the cold water they ended up in. After washing ashore in Cornwall and Devon, England, they were rescued by two local marine sanctuaries and were nursed back to health. But the rescuers had a dilemma because they didn’t have the resources to take them back to warmer waters, and, without the aid, the turtles would have died in the cold water they were found in. Enter the heroes of the sea as the HMS Medway just happened to be going to the Caribbean and decided to give the six turtles a ride to safer waters. Go, Royal Navy! A piece of US history found during a move Back in 1787, a hundred copies of the US constitution were printed in the lead-up to the Constitutional Convention. Out of the hundred, only eight were signed by Mr Charles Thomson, then the secretary of the Continental Congress. One of those eight copies was just discovered inside a house in the Hayes Plantation in North Carolina, which was owned by Samuel Johnston, the state’s Governor between 1787 and 1789. The property had been stewarded by a single family for seven generations but they decided to hand it to the state as a historic property. While they were cleaning out the house in 2022, they found the valuable document in an old cabinet. This incredibly rare piece of American history is set to be auctioned off at Brunk Auctioneers. It is expected to fetch $20 million or more, and the starting bid of $1 million has already been met. For comparison, another copy of the Constitution sold for $42.3 million at Sotheby’s Auction house in 2021. a move (ici) un déménagement in the lead-up to dans la période qui précède to be owned by être détenu par to be stewarded by être géré par to hand donner to clean out débarrasser, ranger a cabinet un meuble de rangement to be auctioned être mis aux enchères to fetch (ici) rapporter une somme a bid une offre English Now o o 137 December 2024-January 2025 11 Indigenous wisdom always helpful It’s wildfire season in North America: more than a hundred fires burned across the western part of the US in October, while in Canada, more than two hundred communities were under evacuation orders. Several factors are thought to be responsible for the fires, including the drought, which was brought about by climate change, and mismanagement by forestry officials, who have allowed dangerous levels of vegetation to grow unchecked. The wildfire surges have led authorities to listen to what the Indigenous people of Australia, Canada and America have been telling them for decades: in order to stop large fires, you should set fire to the forest. While it may sound strange, it works. The Indigenous people used small, controlled burns to forest and grasslands to promote grazing and encourage the growth of medicinal plants and food. When done in a controlled fashion, it helps return nutrients to the soil and avoids the build-up of dead plants that cause the more dangerous and devastating fires that can break out. Banfield has a meeting with a curator from the Isles of Scilly Museum to see if they can better identify the object, which is about the size of a thumbtack. Sometimes called ‘glyptics’, these little ornaments have been associated with ancient Rome and Greece for thousands of years but became popular throughout the Victorian period, thus the question of origin and confusion concerning the dating.
