The brothers then repeated their success, but on an even grander scale. They used the money from the acquisition to found a company called X.com. In 2000, X.com merged with another company to form Paypal, and two years later, eBay acquired Paypal for $1.5 billion. SpaceX, Tesla and The Boring Company It was in 2002 that Musk founded SpaceX, which designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company soon began working with NASA, and in 2012, it made history by becoming the first private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station. SpaceX is now offering commercial flights into space, at a cost of $55 million per ticket, and is developing a reusable launch vehicle called Starship, to attain its ultimate goal of colonizing Mars. As well as being the CEO of SpaceX, Musk is also the CEO of Tesla, which he joined in 2004. Tesla is known for producing electric cars but also produces battery products and solar roofs. It is the world’s biggest seller of electric vehicles, and in 2017, it surpassed General Motors to become the world’s most valuable From South Africa to the US Born to a Canadian mother and South African father, Musk, 51, grew up in Pretoria, South Africa. He became interested in computers at a young age and created a computer game when he was just 12. After finishing school, he went to the University of Pretoria for a short period, before moving to Canada at age 17, to avoid mandatory service in the South African military. In Canada, Musk attended Queen’s University at Kingston in Ontario. Then, two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in the US city of Philadelphia, where he obtained two degrees: one in economics and the other in physics. He went on to Stanford University in California, to do a PhD in energy physics. However, just two days into the program, he left to take advantage of the growing popularity of the Internet and found his first company. Tesla is developing software to facilitate autonomous driving, though its Autopilot system has often been criticized over safety concerns. In 2015, Musk co-founded an artificial intelligence research laboratory called OpenAI, to advance digital intelligence for the benefit of humanity. A year later, he co-founded Neuralink Corporation, a neurotechnology company that is developing implantable brain–machine interfaces, and The Boring Company, to reduce traffic in urban areas. The Boring Company has already built two tunnels in Las Vegas, Nevada, to facilitate a new form of transportation envisioned by Musk called Hyperloop, which transports people inside pods at high speeds. Taking over Twitter Although admired by many, Musk has often been criticized for the things he’s said and done. He was at the center of controversy last year over his acquisition of Twitter; after he initially reneged on his offer to buy the company for $44 billion, Twitter sued him. Soon after acquiring the company, he fired about half of its employees, including some of its top executives. Musk also introduced an $8 monthly subscription on Twitter for a ‘blue check’, traditionally used to verify the identity of high-profile users. However, he had to suspend the program days later after users began impersonating public figures and companies and tweeting under their names, with embarrassing and often hilarious results. n ©kavidesigns/Shutterstock ©FedericoRostagno/Shutterstock. That’s thanks in part to British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who was instrumental in persuading the UK government to introduce a tax on sugary soft drinks in 2018. In the first full year after the tax was introduced, it generated £336 million in revenue, which was used for programmes that tackle childhood obesity. However, Oliver is now asking the government to use this money to pay for free school meals for at least 800,000 more children instead. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, he discussed the “poverty of hunger” and the impact it has on children and their teachers. If a family is too poor to give their child breakfast, it can result in them being “disruptive or sleeping” in class, and “that affects plan A, plan B and plan C of a teacher’s hour,” he said. ©Sharomka/Shutterstock. Studying the origins of UFOs There’s no doubt that unidentified flying objects, commonly known as UFOs, exist. Now NASA is conducting an independent scientific study into their origins. It has recruited a team of 16 researchers, including physicists, a former astronaut and an oceanographer, to conduct a nine-month study based on unclassified data, and plans to publish the results of the study this year. While some assume UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin, NASA says there is no proof of this. The leader of the study, astrophysicist David Spergel, told CNN, “We should be open to the idea that we’re looking at several different phenomena… I’ve spent most of my career as a cosmologist. I can tell you, we don’t know what makes up 95% of the universe.
